Mossakowski Medical Research Institute, Polish Academy of Sciences (MMRI PAS) is the largest institute of the Faculty of Medical Sciences of the Polish Academy of Sciences and the only scientific entity combining research conducted in the fields of clinical medicine and biological sciences. MMRI PAS has the scientific category „A” and boasts the status of a Leading National Research Centre (KNOW) as well as the HR Excellence in Research certificate. The strategic goal of MMRI PAS is to translate scientific research results into clinical practice, which is achieved through participation in numerous national and international collaborations, including R&D and scientific-industrial partnerships, research clusters and platforms.

WE ARE LOOKING FOR:

An outstanding scientist with Polish citizenship, interested in returning to Poland and assuming a leadership position in a research team established at MMRI PAS, in order to jointly submit an application in the NAWA Polskie Powroty 2022 competition.

The ideal candidate, if awarded funding, will establish and lead a team focused on conducting research and development with a strong application component in one or more of the following areas:
 medical sciences (new therapies, medicinal products and medical devices, diagnostic methods, telemedicine & AI, nanomedicine),
 biotechnology,
 biomaterials,
 nanotechnology,
 bioinformatics,
 biomedical engineering.

AN IDEAL CANDIDATE SHOULD DEMONSTRATE:
 documented record of carrying out R&D projects, leading a research team or project teams, gained through scientific work abroad,
 strong orientation towards applied science, including cooperation with business sector and practical applications of research work results,
 documented portfolio of research results/products with commercialization potential, protected by patents (or ready to be introduced in the implementation phase) or unique "know-how" with commercialization potential,
 ready to implement plan to include in the Polskie Powroty 2022 project an application component concerning applied research and development works in the maximum amount of PLN 400k, as stipulated by the competition regulations,
 strong motivation to translate research results in the business sector, clinical or laboratory practice,
 potential to obtain external funding for retrofitting laboratory space with research equipment,
 potential to obtain funding for conducting research and maintaining a research team after the completion of the Polskie Powroty 2022 project,
 readiness to carry out interdisciplinary projects with the participation of research teams of MMRI PAS and external entities, including business enterprises.

ADDITIONAL ASSETS:
 proven track record of successful commercialization,
 established database of business contacts and ongoing cooperation with the business sector,
 knowledge of Polish economic realities and law regulations related to conducting business activity,
 ability to run commercial projects with particular emphasis on managerial skills,
 ability to develop a business plan, appraise inventions and know-how,
 knowledge of the principles of intellectual property protection,
 knowledge of issues related to technology transfer,
 ability to establish spin out and spin off companies and/or a proven track record of personally operating such companies.

BENEFITS OF THE POLSKIE POWROTY 2022 GRANT:
 opportunity to return to Poland as a research team leader,
 competitive salary: PLN 220k - PLN 330k per year (depending on the applicant’s experience) paid over a period of 24-48 months (depending on the duration of the project),
 project group members’ salaries: PLN 120k - 250k per year (depending on the applicant’s experience),
 an allowance in the amount of PLN 20k to cover relocation expenses,
 full-time employment at the MMRI PAS as a research team leader for the entire project duration,
 MMRI PAS provides necessary office and laboratory space, access to essential research infrastructure.

THE SUCCESSFUL GRANT AWARDEE WILL ADDITIONALLY BE OFFERED:
 administrative support during realization of the Polskie Powroty 2022 project,
 support in applying for external funding of scientific research and development activities,
 specialist support of the Technology Transfer Department in identifying potential end users of the solutions with application and commercialization potential, business negotiations, patent protection, product/know how appraisals, drawing up contracts, etc.,
 marketing support in promoting research results with application potential in Poland and abroad.

COMPETITION REQUIREMENTS:
According to the competition requirements, a returning scientist can be a person who:
 holds Polish citizenship,
 holds at least a PhD degree,
 has worked as a scientist in a foreign university, research institute or research department of a business enterprise for at least 1 year and has not lived and worked in Poland during that time,
 can demonstrate scientific achievements recognizable in the international scientific community and distinguishable in the context of the discipline and career stage.

HOW TO PLAN A PROJECT?

 the project should start between 01.04-30.10.23 and last 24-48 months (depending on the applicant’s experience),
 the maximum project’s budget is PLN 1,143,200 or PLN 2,397,600 (depending on the applicant’s experience),
 the project may additionally include a research component concerning basic research (additional PLN 200k) or an application component concerning applied research and development works (additional PLN 400k),
 application deadline: 25.07.2022.
