We are proud to announce the publication of the world’s first international recommendations on smoking cessation for people with type 2 diabetes. These guidelines have just appeared in the prestigious journal „Diabetes Research and Clinical Practice.”
We are particularly delighted that researchers from our Department of Human Epigenetics - Prof. Magdalena Walicka, MD and Prof. Edward Franek, MD - participated in the work of the international expert panel (the DiaSmokeFree Working Group) and Magdalena Walicka is the lead author of these groundbreaking recommendations!
Although smoking significantly increases the risk of chronic complications associated with type 2 diabetes - particularly cardiovascular issues—physicians have previously lacked comprehensive guidelines tailored to the specific nature of this disease. The new recommendations are the result of work by the DiaSmokeFree group - 35 experts from 13 countries established at the initiative of CoEHAR, an interdisciplinary research center based at the University of Catania in Italy.
The new consensus transforms standard smoking cessation advice into a structured, personalized clinical process. It provides physicians with a practical management framework covering the choice of pharmacotherapy, behavioral support, relapse prevention, metabolic monitoring, and consideration of interactions between medications and tobacco smoke.
As the lead author, Magdalena Walicka summarizes:
"People with type 2 diabetes who smoke face an exceptionally high burden of preventable complications. Yeti t is shockingto note that cessation suport has rarely been tailored to their clinical needs."
We extend our sincere congratulations to our researchers and the entire team on this tremendous international success, which will have a tangible impact on diabetes care standards worldwide!
