The current research program of the Department of Neurogenetics and Functional Genomics:

  • functional studies of the underlying mechanisms of familial Alzheimer’s disease, with a particular focus on synaptic dysfunction, using a model based on reprogrammed human neurons and brain organoids
  • identification and comprehensive characterization (including bioinformatics) of mutations and genomic variants associated with the clinical phenotype of CUN neurodegenerative diseases, muscular, neurodevelopmental, neuropsychiatric, and related disorders
  • analysis of cellular and molecular processes (including mitochondrial function and mitophagy) underlying frontotemporal dementia (FTD) spectrum disorders caused by mutations in the PGRN, MAPT, and C9orf72 genes
  • development of new cellular models using iPSC lines derived from patients with frontotemporal dementia (FTD) caused by progranulin (PGRN) deficiency and new mutations detected by whole-genome sequencing
  • identification and comprehensive characterization of nuclear and mitochondrial genome variants relevant to achieving outstanding athletic performance

The area of the research in which the candidate would participate:

  • in vitro functional studies of synaptic dysfunction as an early sign of Alzheimer’s disease using an organoid model and reprogrammed neurons derived from patients with presenilin gene mutations
  • multiomic studies of the early stages of Alzheimer's disease
  • participation in the development of a platform providing access to brain organoid models from patients with neurodegenerative diseases, for the purpose of testing research hypotheses with translational potential
