Post-doctoral Researcher in Experimental Neurobiology / Neuropharmacology
City: Warsaw
Deadline for applications: 30.09.2026
Expected starting date: November/ December 2026
Procedure ID: ZKTS.110.1.2026
Project description
The project focuses on elucidating the role of the purinergic P2X7 receptor (P2X7R) in the development of metabolic dysfunction and neurodegeneration in Parkinson’s disease. Particular attention will be paid to the mechanisms through which pathological forms of α-synuclein activate P2X7R, leading to mitochondrial dysfunction, oxidative stress, and impaired cellular metabolism. The research will employ complementary, state-of-the-art in vivo and in vitro models, including an experimental model of Parkinson’s disease induced by α-synuclein oligomers, behavioural testing, magnetic resonance imaging, primary neuronal cultures, and advanced molecular, biochemical, and imaging techniques.
The main research areas will include:
- regulation of oxidative stress and redox homeostasis;
- mitochondrial quality-control mechanisms, including mitophagy and the mitochondrial unfolded protein response (mtUPR);
- alterations in glucose metabolism and central carbon metabolism;
- molecular, morphological, and functional consequences of P2X7R activation in the brain;
- the relationship between metabolic dysfunction and the development of behavioural abnormalities in an experimental model of Parkinson’s disease.
The project integrates neurochemistry, mitochondrial biology, metabolomics, and research into the mechanisms of neurodegeneration. Its implementation will provide a deeper understanding of α-synuclein toxicity and help determine whether P2X7R may represent a novel therapeutic target in Parkinson’s disease.
