This competition is addressed to students of bioinformatics, computer science, programming or computer techniques.

We are recruiting to the OPUS project No. 2022/45/B/NZ5/04226 entitled " Co-targeting of tumor microenvironment-mediated adaptation to hypoxia renders glioblastoma more susceptible to oncolytic virus immunotherapy" funded by the National Science Centre and carried out at the Tumor Microenvironment Laboratory at the Mossakowski Medical Research Institute Polish Academy of Sciences (MMRI PAS). The project is led by Dr. Agnieszka Bronisz.

The competition is open for persons who meet the conditions specified in the regulations for awarding research scholarships by the National Science Center in OPUS grants (Resolution of the NCN Council No. 25/2019 of 14 March 2019).

Project description

Effective analysis and visualization of cancer biology data are often compromised by its inherent complexity and the significant demands of the required computer programming skills. To address these barriers, we propose the creation of a user-friendly web platform designed to streamline the integration and visualization of diverse omics data.

The primary objective is to develop a platform to enhance the distribution and sharing of scientific findings derived from advanced technologies, including next-generation sequencing and mass spectrometry. This platform will promote open science by providing interactive and easily accessible data to a wide-ranging scientific community.

Responsibilities of IT Trainees:
and visualize complex biological datasets.
1. Integrate visualization tools that are compatible and efficient Collaboration on Tool Design and Development:
Assist in designing and developing software to analyze across various web browsers.

2. Data Analysis and Visualization:
Actively participate in analyzing large-scale biological datasets to support cancer research objectives.
Develop a seamless, intuitive graphical interface that allows researchers to explore, navigate, and download data, promoting open data practices.

3. Interface and Functionality Enhancement:
Design a user-friendly graphical interface for easy dataset navigation and interaction.
Implement search and filtering functionalities that utilize experimental metadata.
Develop and integrate sophisticated visualization tools to present omics data clearly and effectively.
Ensure the platform supports common data visualization and graphing functions.

4. Documentation and Training:
Collaborate in creating comprehensive documentation and training materials to help users navigate the new platform efficiently.

Opportunity for Trainees:
This internship offers students a unique opportunity to apply their technical skills in a real-world setting and contribute substantially to advancing new methods and tools in cancer research.

Requirements for the candidate:
• status of a student of 1st, 2nd or master's degree course conducted at universities in Poland in the field of bioinformatics, computer science, programming or computer techniques.
• interest in the use of bioinformatics solutions in the field of medicine and biological sciences,
• basic programming knowledge (Python or R, SQL, Java)
• knowledge of statistical issues
• excellent organizational skills, attention to detail and the ability to find solutions
• participation in student research groups and training is welcome
• proficiency in spoken and written English

Additional assets:
• scientific achievements documented by international publications in journals indexed in the JCR list
• documented active participation in national and international conferences and symposiums

We offer:
• Opportunity to gain extensive professional experience at the prestigious Institute of the Polish Academy of Sciences, conducting research in the field of medical biology and clinical medicine
• friendly, inspiring, and supportive work environment within the team of the Tumor Microenvironment
• scholarship

Please submit the following documents:
• motivation letter containing information about scientific interests, research work, and explaining why you want to work on the project
• resume/CV including details of previous education, scientific achievements, awards
• documents confirming student status
