The current research program of the Laboratory of Protein Engineering:

  • development of novel antimicrobials based on bacteriolytic enzymes
  • testing of applicability of enzybiotics as microbiota modulators in skin conditions like atopic dermatitis, impetigo, psoriasis etc.
  • novel antimicrobial wound dressings tests to treat chronic wounds, e.g., diabetic foot, ulcers
  • biofilm formation studies and searching for novel eradication methods
  • structural studies of mechanisms of bacterial autolysin activation as a target of antimicrobial treatment

The area of the research in which the candidate would participate:

  • development of new antimicrobials using structural studies and protein engineering methods
  • antimicrobial assays optimization to test novel antimicrobials efficiency, specificity and stability
  • testing of antimicrobial activity of newly generated formulations and wound dressings supplemented with antimicrobials
  • optimizing in vitro models to test medical applications of antimicrobials, e.g., skin models, wound models etc.

Description of job position activities:

  • generation of novel enzymes/proteins, based on known sequences: obtaining recombinant proteins, study their activity, adjustment of optimal conditions, testing specificity
  • improvement of antimicrobials activity by development of chimeric proteins
  • optimization of antimicrobials tests according to requirements of target applications
  • development of formulation supplemented with antimicrobial, e.g., gels, creams, wound dressings in which its activity and stability will be preserved and stable
  • implementing new protocols and methods to improve the quality of scientific research in the Laboratory
  • assisting in preparation of grant applications according to the call requirements
  • preparing reports on conducted research
  • analysing, developing, and presenting the obtained data at regular internal meetings
  • preparation of manuscripts and active assistance in their submission
  • preparation of conference presentations, and representing the Institute at scientific conferences
  • active participation in seminars, courses, and trainings

Requirements:

  • at least a Ph.D. degree in medical, biological or related sciences
  • at least 2 original articles in scientific journals indexed in JCR, including at least one of which the candidate is the first author, the first equal author or a corresponding author, published after obtaining the Ph.D. degree, but not containing the results of the Ph.D. thesis
  • experience in the research work on protein engineering, protein structural studies and biotechnology documented by publications in peer-reviewed journals and conference abstracts
  • experience (minimum 5 years) in laboratory work, preferably in molecular biology, biochemistry, biotechnology, microbiology)
  • creativity, openness to new challenges, and teamwork skills
  • indicating the Mossakowski Medical Research Institute, Polish Academy of Sciences as the first-place employer
  • fluency in English, both spoken and written
  • documented active participation in national and international conferences and symposia

Additional requirements (desirable):

  • experience with antimicrobials testing in vitro
  • practical knowledge of recombinant protein generation in coli system, including structural analysis, expression vectors design, overexpression and purification
  • ability to analyze and present acquired results
  • knowledge of statistical methods used in scientific research
  • supervision of young scientists

The current research program of the Department of Neurogenetics and Functional Genomics:

  • functional studies of the underlying mechanisms of familial Alzheimer’s disease, with a particular focus on synaptic dysfunction, using a model based on reprogrammed human neurons and brain organoids
  • identification and comprehensive characterization (including bioinformatics) of mutations and genomic variants associated with the clinical phenotype of CUN neurodegenerative diseases, muscular, neurodevelopmental, neuropsychiatric, and related disorders
  • analysis of cellular and molecular processes (including mitochondrial function and mitophagy) underlying frontotemporal dementia (FTD) spectrum disorders caused by mutations in the PGRN, MAPT, and C9orf72 genes
  • development of new cellular models using iPSC lines derived from patients with frontotemporal dementia (FTD) caused by progranulin (PGRN) deficiency and new mutations detected by whole-genome sequencing
  • identification and comprehensive characterization of nuclear and mitochondrial genome variants relevant to achieving outstanding athletic performance

The area of the research in which the candidate would participate:

  • in vitro functional studies of synaptic dysfunction as an early sign of Alzheimer’s disease using an organoid model and reprogrammed neurons derived from patients with presenilin gene mutations
  • multiomic studies of the early stages of Alzheimer's disease
  • participation in the development of a platform providing access to brain organoid models from patients with neurodegenerative diseases, for the purpose of testing research hypotheses with translational potential

Description of job position activities:

  • conducting cell culture experiments (human neurons, 2D) and organoid culture experiments (brain organoids, 3D)
  • conducting functional studies of synaptic and epigenetic markers in vitro models
  • assisting with electrophysiological recordings (patch-clamp in whole-cell configuration) and analysis using microelectrode array (MEA) technology, as well as calcium response recordings (GCAMP8, Fura2-AM)
  • active participation in the scientific and organizational activities of the Department and the Institute
  • initiative and commitment to solving experimental tasks, analyzing, interpreting, and discussing results
  • preparing publications based on the obtained results
  • representing the Department and the Institute at scientific conferences

Requirements:

  • a master’s degree (or equivalent) in biological or medical sciences
  • proficiency in cell biology techniques (cell and tissue culture), molecular biology, and confocal microscopy
  • good knowledge of bioinformatics methods and statistical data analysis
  • independence and good work organization
  • creativity, ability to work in a team
  • preference for MMRI PAS as the primary place of employment
  • good or very good command of English

Additional requirements (desirable):

  • experience with organoid culture methods
  • knowledge of electrophysiological measurement methods
  • authoring or co-authoring of scientific publications

  • Staphylococci biofilm formation mechanisms and their susceptibility to antimicrobials

  • searching for novel antimicrobials to eradicate biofilms from surfaces in food industry

Description of job position activities:

  • optimization of bacterial biofilms growth, their visualization in vitro using various staining methods and microscopy
  • biofilm eradication assays optimization using combination of novel antimicrobials
  • isolation and identification of bacteria from various sources, testing their susceptibility to antimicrobials
  • implementing new protocols and methods to improve the quality of scientific research in the Laboratory
  • assisting in preparation of grant applications according to the call requirements
  • preparing reports on conducted research
  • analysing, developing, and presenting the obtained data at regular internal meetings
