The current research program of the Laboratory of Molecular Basis of Neurodegeneration:
• cellular and molecular mechanisms responsible for the pathogenesis of central nervous system disorders (Huntington’s disease, Parkinson’s disease, ischemic stroke);
• molecular basis of differential sensitivity of individual neuronal populations to defined neurotoxic factors;
• arginine metabolism in the pathology of the striatum and hippocampus;
• unique properties of hippocampal region CA2;
• the role of polyamines in regulating mitochondrial calcium flux in the hippocampus;
• searching for novel biomarkers in neurodegenerative diseases;
• the use of amyloid protein amplification-based methods for the search for new drugs against neurodegenerative diseases.
The area of the research in which the candidate would participate:
• changes in arginase 2 activity, expression, and distribution and in arginine metabolism in the mouse model
of Huntington’s disease;
• behavioral and neuropathological studies of a mouse model of Huntington’s disease under arginase 2 deficiency;
• studying changes in polyamine distribution in the hippocampus under excitotoxicity and hypoxia using bioorthogonal probes and click chemistry;
• optimization and application of the RT-QuIC method for the identification of early biomarkers of neurodegeneration and for the search for new pharmacological agents in the treatment of tauopathies and synucleinopathies.
Description of job position activities:
• generating experimental models and collecting biological material;
• conducting in vivo studies;
• performing chemical, biochemical, histological, and microscopic experiments;
• implementing new research technologies to improve the quality of scientific studies;
• active participation in the scientific activities of the Laboratory, the Institute, and the scientific community;
• active acquisition of research funding by preparation of grant applications in accordance with competition rules;
• active participation in the implementation of research projects, following the requirements of the financing institution;
• preparing reports on conducted research;
• analysis and presentation of the obtained data;
• preparation of manuscripts and their publication;
• preparation of conference presentations, and representing the Institute at scientific conferences;
• active participation in seminars, courses, and trainings.
Requirements for the position of assistant:
• having a master's degree (or equivalent) in the field of medical, biological or related sciences;
• experience in molecular biology, biochemistry, histology, and microscopy techniques (e.g. PCR, qPCR, western blotting, fluorimetric/spectrophotometric assays, enzymatic assays, enzyme activity assays, histological/immunohistochemical tissue staining, brightfield microscopy, confocal microscopy);
• experience in working with rodents (supported with appropriate certifications);
• experience in tissue cultures;
• independence and good organizational skills;
• creativity and ability to work in a team;
• indication of Mossakowski Medical Research Institute, Polish Academy of Sciences as the first place of employment;
• fluency in English.
Additional requirements (desirable) for the position of assistant:
• experience with animal models of neurodegenerative diseases;
• practical knowledge of mouse and/or rat brain anatomy;
• ability to analyze and present acquired results;
• knowledge of statistical methods used in scientific research;
• experience in preparing grant proposals;
• documented participation in scientific conferences;
• authorship/co-authorship of scientific publications;
• ability to design, organize, and conduct scientific research and to propose research hypotheses.
Requirements for the position of the assistant professor:
• at least a Ph.D. degree in medical, biological, or related sciences;
• having at least 2 original scientific publications in scientific journals indexed in JCR including at least one of which the candidate is the first, equivalent, or corresponding author, published after the doctorate, but not containing the results of the doctorate;
• experience in molecular biology and biochemistry techniques (e.g. PCR, qPCR, western blotting, fluorometric and spectrophotometric assays, enzyme-based assays, enzyme activity measurements, sample preparation for chromatographic and mass spectrometry analyses);
• experience in histological and microscopy techniques (histological/immunohistochemical tissue staining, brightfield microscopy, confocal microscopy);
• experience in working with rodents, with appropriate certification;
• experience in maintaining and working with tissue cultures;
• practical knowledge of mouse and/or rat brain anatomy;
• ability to design, organize, and conduct scientific research and to propose research hypotheses;
• ability to analyze and present acquired results, including large-scale data sets;
• experience in preparing grant proposals;
• strong independence and excellent organizational skills;
• creativity and ability to work in a team;
• knowledge of statistical methods used in scientific research;
• indication of Mossakowski Medical Research Institute, Polish Academy of Sciences as the first place of employment;
• documented active participation in international conferences and symposia;
• fluency in English.
Additional requirements (desirable) for the position of assistant professor:
• experience in working with animal models of neurodegenerative diseases;
• practical knowledge of live imaging microscopy techniques;
• experience in working with acute slices;
• practical knowledge of techniques for identifying amyloid proteins;
• practical knowledge of methods used in neuropathological analyses.
